Bibliometric Analysis of Specialization Thesis in Medicine, Master's and Doctoral Theses on Public Health in the Last 11 Years in Turkey

Objective: The aim of this study is to perform a bibliometric analysis of specialization thesis in medicine, master\'s and doctoral theses on public health in the last 11 years in Turkey.

Material and Method: In this descriptive study, public health theses between 2009-2019 were examined. Name, page number of pages, subject and research type of the total 1166 theses; the author\'s name and gender; the name, title and gender of the mentor and name of university has been recorded. While evaluating the data, descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation were calculated, chisquare test, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis test were used for comparisons by thesis type. p <0.05 was considered significant in statistical analysis.

Results: A total of 46.9% of theses (n =547) were master\'s thesis, 39.2% (n =457) were specialization thesis in medicine and 13.9% (n =162) were doctoral thesis; 67.3% (n =785) of the thesis students were women. The top three universities that publish most theses were Erciyes University with 8.5% (n =99), Dokuz Eylül University with 7.1% (n =83) and Istanbul University with 5.7% (n =67). When the distribution of thesis topics is examined, the three most frequently studied topics were occupational health with 19.6% (n =229), non-communicable diseases with 11.7% (n =137), and reproductive and women\'s health with 11.2% (n =131). The least studied thesis topics were medical education (n =5, 0.4%), oral-dental health (n =6, 0.5%) and community nutrition (n =17, 1.5%). The most used research type in theses was descriptive / crosssectional research with 80.7% (n =941).

Conclusion: In the last 11 years in Turkey, the majority of specialization thesis in medicine, master\'s and doctoral theses on public health were descriptive/crosssectional and the most studied thesis topic was occupational health.
