Objective: Staphylococci are the microorganisms that take the first place among the factors of hospital infection. Due to the increasing spread of resistant strains, various difficulties are experienced in the treatment of infections caused by these microorganisms. The number of antibiotics that can be used in the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococci is limited. Moxifloxacin is an antibacterial agent from the quinolo-ne group that has been used in recent years and is an alternative in the treatment of susceptible and methicillin-resistant staphylococci.

Material and Method: In this study, moxifloxacin susceptibility of methicillin-resistant and susceptible staphylococci isolated from various clinical specimens was investigated by disk diffusion and MIC method in order to determine the efficacy of moxifloxacin on staphylococcal strains isolated in our city.

Results: One hundred and sixty S.aureus strains and 40 coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) strains isolated from blood, sputum, urine and wound samples sent from various clinics included in the study. By disk diffusion method, 132 (82.5%) of 160 S.aureus strains and 33 (825%) of 40 CNS strains were found to be sensitive to moxifloxacin. By MIC method, 146 (91.2%) of 160 S.aureus strains and 35 (87.5%) of 40 CNS strains were found to be susceptible to moxifloxacin.

Conclusion: Random use of quinolones poses the problem of resistance, especially in staphylococcal infections. In this study, it is suggested that moxifloxacin will find wide use in the clinic, since it has been observed that moxifloxacin has a high level of activity against staphylococci.
