Objective: We aimed to evaluate the results of intramedullary radius ulna nailing of patients who applied to our clinic due to forearm fractures and received surgical treatment.

Material and Method: In this retrospective study we examined the outcomes of intramedullary nailing of the radius and ulna in 50 patients who underwent surgical treatment upon presenting with closed or type 1 open forearm fractures to the orthopedics and traumatology clinic between January 2015 and December 2019. The patients included 36 men and 14 women with a mean age of 36.1±16.8 years. The patients were followed up for a median duration of 56 (48-120) weeks for the monitoring of postoperative functionality and union.

Results: The mean score of the patients in the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire was 5.8 (3.3-38.8). According to the Grace-Eversman evaluation criteria, the results were excellent in 41 (82%) patients, good in eight (16%) patients and acceptable in one (2%) patient; while according to Anderson criteria, the results were excellent in 47 (94%) and good in three (6%) patients. The rate of union was 100%.

Conclusion: The advantages of intramedullary nail fixation include minimal exposure, short operating time, low infection risk, closed treatment option, cosmetic benefits, short immobilization time, less periosteal stripping, rigid and stable fixation, few complications, high rates of union and less need to remove the implant. Intramedullary nail fixation can thus be considered a reliable treatment approach in the adult age group, and a valid alternative to other surgical treatments.
