Objective:
In this study, we investigated the effects of intramusculer use of PGE1 in experimental left renal ischemia-reperfüsion injury in rats histologically and biochemically.

Materials and Methods:
28 adult female Wistar rats with regular estrous cycles were randomly divided into 4 groups. Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 , ischemia was produced for 60 minutes. Group 3 , 60 minutes , ischemia was produced and than 60 minutes reperfused. Group 4; ischemia and reperfusion was produced for 60 minutes. Before fifteen minutes of reperfusion 20 mcg/kg/IM PGE1 was performed. For light microscopic investigation, renal samples put into %10 formaldehyde solutions. Glomerular and tubular injury was histologically determined with light microscopy.

Results:
Light microscopic investigations showed that the renal damage in the ischemia group was more than the control group. But the most extensive damage occured at ischemia- reperfusion group. In PGE1 group the damage was less than ischemia-reperfüsion group.

Conclusion:
In our study, the histological and biochemical analyses revealed that PGE1 was an effective antioxidan in experimental renal ischemiareperfüsion injury in rats to reduce the damage. ©2004, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi
