Objectives: Multiple sclerosis is disease that is characterised by pathological demyelination, inflammation and sclerosis in central nervous system and is occasion motor, sensorial, cognitive and a lot of dysfunction. In this study P300 test is used as a neurophysiologic method for evoked potentials at the patients who received IF beta-Ia treatment in the MS clinic. The study was aim to search the effect of IF beta-Ia on cognitive function with MS patients.

Materials and Methods: The study group was included twenty patients RR-MS who received IF beta-Ia treatment. Control groups were included twenty healty volunteers who have any systemic or neurologic disease. In both study and control groups standart ‘odd ball paradigma’ used for obtaining P300 test. After the first P300 test interferon beta-1a (Rebif 44 microgram prefiiled injector, 3 times a week and subcutenous) administered to the study group patients. P300 test were applied to both of the groups 2 times in 6 months intervals.

Results: There were no statistically significant differences at P300 latency and amplitude values at 6th month of both study and control groups (p>0,05, Mann-Whitney test). No statistical significant correlation obtained between pre and post-treatment disease duration, EDSS score, P300 amplitudes and latency values in the patient group (p>0,05, Wilcoxon test).

Conclusion: The results of this study show that prospective studies and larger series needed for determination of the effect of interferon beta-Ia on cognitive function by using P300. ©2005, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi
