Almost all poisoning incidences observed in 0-9 years age group children are due to accident and completely differ from adult poisoning cases in origin where the reasons are often committed suicide, accident or criminal.

In this study, a total of 108 files belonging to the poisoned patients, aged between 0-9 years, admitted to the Firat University Medical Faculty Research Hospital between January 1997 and December 1999 were retrospectively evaluated in order to determine properties of childhood poisonings, role of parents’ lack of caution and attention and failure to take appropriate precautions and mistakes in arrangement of forensic reports regarding this cases.

The striking finding was that 0-9 years period poisoning cases were accounted for 46.2% of total poisoning cases and 57.4 % of these cases involved poisoning in 0-3 years old period.

Despite in all cases where temporary report was issued with the conclusion of “existence of life threat”, after evaluation of files it was determined that the actual life threat was present in only 38 cases (35.2%).
