Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the nutritional habits and body mass indexes of the students attending to a private school.

Materials and Methods: This destrictive study was carried out among 357 children attending Abdullah Aymaz Primary School between 10th March-20th April 2007. After the anthropometric measurements of the students (height, weight) were computed, Body Mass Indexes (BMI) based on an age and sex-specific were determined.

Results: Of the 357 students, 175 were (49.0%) girls, 182 were (51.0%) boys and were aged between 7and 14 years old. The median age value of the students was 10 (min=7, max=14). Of the students, 87.1% (n=311) have had breakfast every day, 93.0 % (n=332) had lunch, 94.9% (n=339) had dinner regularly. Of the students, 62.5% (n=223) consumed milk and yoghurt, 56.9% (n=203) cheese, 87.4 % (n=312) bread, 35.2% (n=126) jam and honey, and 63.0% fresh fruit daily. There was no difference in the mean value of BKI between all age groups (p>0.05). Underweightness did not exist in boys and girls aged 7-9, boys aged 10, and girls aged 11 and 12. Being the highest values, 13.3% of the girls aged 14 were underweight, 33.3% of the boys aged 7 were overweight and 20.0 % of the boys aged 10 were obese.

Conclusion: In this study, the frequency of overweight and obesity were found higher than the malnutrition. It is necessary that the regulations of the nutrition and life habits should be taken into account during the school health programs.
