The Level of Burnout and influence of Family Support in Nurses working in a University Hospital

Objective: This study was planned to determine whether some demographic and occupational variables were related with burnout and family support in nurses who work in hospital of Medical Faculty.

Materials and Methods: The research is astudy of descriptive characteristic, The research prepared between February- March 2008. Data were collected from 191 nurses who work in the internal medicine and cerrahi service using sociodemographic form, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Family Supports Scales. For data analysis, the SPSS for windows version 11.0 was used. ANOVA and t test were administered to the data.

Results: The mean value of ADÖ subscores 33.17±6.07, MBI subscores including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment were assessed as 8.18±10.96, 7.5±6.21 and 36.32±7.55 respectively in the sample. According to their age variable, there was a significant difference between their average personal accomplishment scores. A significant correlation between the levels of burnout and average family support scores with type of school graduated, duration of the work. and marital status was not found. According to the way of choosing of the occupation variable, there was no significant difference in, insensitivity, personal unaccomplishment and family support scores. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between their emotional exhaustion levels according to the way of choosing of the occupation.

Conclusion: There was no significant difference among nurses' MBI subscale and average family support scores. MBI scores "Emotıonal exhautıon" subscale scores were at the upper level, in addıtıon, "desensıtızatıon", and "personal accomplıshment" scores were moderate level in nurses.
