Objective: To investigate the frequency of serous macular detachment (SMD) in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME)..

Materials and Methods: In our clinic, 258 eyes of 184 patients with DME were searched retrospectively according to the results of optical coherence tomography (OCT) that were taken between January 2008 and June 2009. According to the results of OCT, the patients diagnosed with DME (Group 1), and the ones having SMD and DME (Group 2) were compared regarding gender, the affected eye and age average.

Results: The ages of the patients were between 18 and 83, while the age averages were 56,64 years. 108 (%58,70) of the patients were female and 76(%41,30) of them were male. DME was found at both eyes of 74 (%40,22) patients. SMD with DME was identified in 56 eyes of 37 (%20,10) patients of 184 all under search. Two-sided SMD was occured in 18 (%9,78) of the patients. The number of cases having SMD at least in one eye was 37(%20,10). The age averages of the patients identified with SMD were 52,64(age range: 25-83). Among these 37 patients 17 (%45,95) of them were female and 20 (%54,05) were male.

Conclusion: However SMD isn't rarely seen among patients with DMO, examining OCT at diagnosis is quite important. Since only OCT can certainly show SMD which is a predictor about the success of medical treatment applications, the real frequency rates will probably increase more by the use of OCT.
