Objective: To evaluate polytetraflouroethylen and silicone rod use in frontalis suspension surgery in patients with ptosis.

Materials and Methods: Between February 2005 - February 2007, a total of 24 eyelids of 20 patients underwent frontal suspensor surgery. Crawford technique was performed all patients. Full correction or 1 mm of residual ptosis with a good lid contour was considered as success.

Results: There were congenital ptosis in 16, involutional ptosis in 3, third nerve paralysis in 1 patient. Four (%20) cases were female and 16 (%80) were male. Mean age±SD was 13,1±8,2 (range, 5 to 70) years. Polytetraflouroethylen material was applied to 10 eyes, silicon rod material was applied to 14 eyes. Mean follow-up time was 7,9 (2-36) months. During this period, a second operation was performed to 7 eyelids of 5 patients since they had postoperative complications. Silicon rods were used in 3 patients and there was slight recovery. Furthermore, tissue erosion and overinflammation against the suture material were seen in 4 patients. Silicon rod was used in 3 patients and polytetraflouroethylen material was used in one patient. After the second operations, ptosis was corrected in all cases.

Conclusion: In comparison of polytetraflouroethylen and silicon materials in patients with frontal sling surgery, postoperative complications such as, tissue erosion, inflammatory reaction, and granuloma formation were observed less with use of polytetraflouroethylene material.
