In this study, results of parasitological examinations of stools in the Parasitology laboratory of the Fırat University Medical Centre were evaluated retrospectively in order to determine the distribution of intestinal parasites in our region for the last year.

The study included the results of the stool samples taken from outpatients and inpatients that were referred to our hospital between 2004 and 2005. All of the samples were investigated by the cellophane tape method and the direct wet mount method. Also, trichrome stained and acid-fast stained preparations were examined in ambiguous cases.

During the period intestinal parasitic disease was detected in 210 (17.24%) of all patients. Only one species of parasite was found in 195 patients whereas two species were found in 15 cases. The most parasites were B. Hominis (26.66%), G. İntestinalis (24.76%) ve E. coli (20.95%) respectively.

The result of this study is similar to our country and previously our results. It has been shown that intestinal parasites are still important for public health. ©2006, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi
