Objectives: In this research cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking prevalence, starting age and the reasons effecting these habits for the adolescence have been studied.

Material and Methods: Being a cross-sectional research, has been applied to 671 students aged 11-17 in Sivas. The students were asked to answer the questionnaires on themselves.

Results: According to research data %67.1 of the students have never smoked, and %18.5 have tried. Daily smoking students ratio is %7.5. Regular smokers ratio among the students is %10.9; female %4.1 and male %14.1. %84.8 stated they meet no problem in purchasing cigarettes. %53.0 of fathers smoke regularly while this is lower for the mothers (%13.7). %85.3 stated they knew the habitant substance is “nicotine”, and %78.1 knew “smoking causes cancer”. Age, sex, family income, student's success upon his own expression, to have had discipline penalty, sharing problems with the family, knowing the cancer causing effects of smoking, living apart from the family is found to be in meaningful relation between smoking behaviour (p<0.05). Only the effect of families' education level on smoking behaviour is found to be meaningless.%0.6 of the students have stated that they are still drinking alcoholic drinks.

Conclusion: While the ratio of the students that have never been drunk is %93.8, the amount of students that have been drunk for more than once is %1.5.Consequently smoking is quite a common behaviour for the students, while alcohol trying and consumption rate is at a very low level. ©2007, Firat University, Medical Faculty
