Instructions to Authors

Firat Medical Journal is the periodical journal of Firat University Medical Faculty, which is published four times a year. The journal publishes original clinical and experimental research, case reports, invited reviews and letters to editor related to all areas of medicine. All the submitted manuscripts will be evaluated with the iThenticate programme in terms of plagiarism.

COPYRIGHT AND SUBMISSION

All manuscripts submitted to the journal for publication should be original and not been previously published elsewhere. They should not be concomitantly submitted to any other journal for evaluation (The manuscript which has been presented previously as an abstract may be mentioned on condition with the statement of the date and the place of the meeting).

All manuscripts submitted for publication should be prepared in accordance with "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" produced and updated by the International Committee of Medical Journals Editors.

Compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki Principles is accepted as the policy of Firat Medical Journal. Therefore, all manuscripts concerning human subjects must contain a statement in the "Materials and Methods" section, indicating that the study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. All study subjects should be informed and written consent should be obtained and this should be declared in the "Materials and Methods" section. All manuscripts dealing with animal subjects must contain a statement indicating that the study was performed according to "The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" with the approval of the local ethics committee, in the "Materials and Methods" section. Ethical responsibility of all research submitted to the journal for publication belongs to the author(s). However, the Editor reserves the right to ask for approval of study by local ethics committee.

The manuscripts should be submitted via the online manuscript evaluation system www.firattipdergisi.com.  The "Transfer of Copyright Agreement Form" should be signed by all co-authors by stating any conflict of interest or funding details if present and provided with the manuscript at the time of submission by online.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Manuscripts can be submitted in Turkish and English. Manuscripts submitted in Turkish should comply with the Dictionary and Spelling Guide of the Turkish Linguistic Society. Anatomical term and names of microorganisms should be based on Latin nomenclature. Terms in daily medical language should be written as read and according to Turkish spelling rules.

A simple, understandable and scientific writing style should be adopted in preparation of manuscripts. Unnecessary repetition should be avoided and abbrevations should be defined where they have been used first.

Submitted manusripts are first reviewed by the editor. Before review process, the editor can send back the manuscript which does not comply with the instructions to authors for correction The manuscript text should be written in a "word" file, "Times New Roman" font, 12 point-type, double-spaced with 2.5 cm space on each margins. The pages should be numbered starting with the title page. Page numbers should appear at the bottom right corner of every page.

The main text file should not contain any information regarding author names and affiliations. The author assigned as the corresponding author is is responsible for all correspondence regarding the manuscript, for all revisions (including names and order of authors) and corrections of galley proofs sent for approval.

ORGANIZATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT

Manuscripts should be prepared in the following order: Abstract, Text, References, Tables and Figures. Tables and Figures should be separate pages. Title page of the manuscript should include the Turkish and English titles.

Abstract: All manuscripts except "Letters to the Editor" should include Turkish and English abstracts. Abbreviations should be avoided in abstracts as much as possible. References, figures, tables and citations should not be used.

There should be three to five key words complying with the Index Medicus medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

Research articles

Research Articles should include; a title and abstract in Turkish (limited to 250 words and structured as (Amaç, Gereç ve Yöntem,  Bulgular, Sonuç), Turkish key words and English title, English structured abstract (limited to 250 words structured as Objective, Material and Method, Results, Conclusion), English key words.

The other sections of the manuscript should include Introduction, Material and Method, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement (if required).

Case reports

Case reports should include Turkish title, Turkish abstract, Turkish key words, English title, English abstract, English key words, Introduction, Case presentation, Discussion and References. Introduction and Discussion sections of the Case reports should be short and concise and the abstract should be prepared as one paragraph. Structured abstract is not required.

Letters to editor

Letter to the Editor should be short and concise. It should be limited to 1000 words and 10 references, and should not include an abstract. Letter to the Editor should bring new contributions or critics to the previously published articles in the journal.  

Tables and figures

Tables, figures, graphics and pictures should be numbered with Arabic numbers in the order in which they appear in the text. Localization of tables, figures, graphics and pictures should be indicated.

Each table should be prepared with the text double spaced on a separate page. Each table should contain a short title. Explanations should not be included in the title but as a footnote. All abbreviations that are not Standard, should be explained in the footnote.

Figures and graphics should be drawn or photographed professionally, and should be in photograph quality when uploaded digitally. Electronic files of the figures and graphics should be submitted in JPEG or GIF format with high resolution (300 dpi) and the quality of these files should be checked on the computer monitor. Figure legends should be indicated at the end of the main text separately. If patient photographs will be used, either the patient should not be recognizable from the photograph or signed consent should be obtained from the patient or his/her legal representative.

References

References should be cited in numerical order in the text, and listed in this order at the end of the paper. They should be shown in brackets at the end of the sentences, in the text. All items in the Reference list should be cited in the text and, conversely, all references cited in the text must be presented in the list. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus. All authors if six or fewer should be listed, for references with more than six authors, first three authors should be listed and followed by et al.

Internet addresses of non-profit organizations, governments, national and international scientific boards and associations can be cited as reference. Date of web access should be indicated.

No royalty fee is paid for publication of manuscripts to the authors.
