Tobacco and Alcohol use Among Medical Students in Istanbul and Associated Variables

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of tobacco and alcohol use among medical students.

Material and Method: For this crosssectional study, 304 students selected by systematic sampling. The questionnaire was sent them via message between May-June 2022. 263 responses (86.0%) received. The questionnaire was included questions for characteristics, “AUDIT” and “FTND”. Data analyzed with the Chi-Square test for categorical variables, and the logistic regression for further statistical analysis by using SPSS. Statistical significance was accepted as p <0.05.

Results: One hundred and twenty-six women (47.9%), 137 (52.1%) men participated. Average age was 22.31∓0.13. Tobacco use accounts for 61 (23.2%) of the participants and alcohol use for 147 (55.9%). 44 (73.3%) of tobacco users were low, 12 (20.0%) were moderate, 4 (6.7%) were highly dependent. Of alcohol users, 99 (67.3%) had low-risk, 43 (29.3%) had harmful, 5 (3.4%) had high-risk behaviors. There was no associations between tobacco and alcohol use with gender and grade. Tobacco use posed 3.7 times risk in alcohol use, 4 times risk in binge drinking. A history of psychiatric disorder posed 2.4 times risk for smoking.

Conclusion: Tobacco use is a risk for alcohol use. History of a psychiatric disorder is a risk for tobacco and alcohol use. It is important to raise awareness on this issue to the medical students who will provide health services to the society. Psychiatric support can be provided to the students have a history of psychiatric disorders. Smoking cessation interventions for students can be included in a routine health programs.
