Objectives: In this study, it was aimed to determine in vitro susceptibility of total 137 Staphylococcus aureus strains, isolated from various clinic specimens between December 2002 and April 2004, against to ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin.Materials and Methods: Quinolone susceptibility of the strains were investigated with disk-difussion method.

Results: Methicillin susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus strains were determines as 49% and ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin susceptibilities were found as 52%, 55%, 56% and 60%, respectively. Efficacy of the studied agents were not statistically significant (p=0.211, 0.123, 0.169, 0.075, respectively).

Conclusion: The studied quinolones were determined as moderately active to Staphylococcus aureus strains. Instead of for using new generation quinolones to methicillin resistant strains which have a wide spectrum resistance to both beta-lactam and non-beta-lactam antibiotics, particularly, it will be more appropriate to use them in non-life threatening infections caused by methicillin susceptible strains. ©2006, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi
