Objectives: The effect of clinical and laboratory findings in the diagnosis of childhood tuberculosis
Materials and Methods: The clinical, laboratory and radiological findings of our patients with tuberculosis who have been followed for the last seven years in our clinic are evaluated retrospectively. Results: Of the all patients 30 (76%) were diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis, and 9 (24%) as extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The highest rate of complaints were primarily high fever (32; 82%), secondary coughing (29; 74%). Seventeen of the patients (43%) had a history of contact with adult patients with tuberculosis. The average tuberculin test reaction was detected as 15.6 ± 3.9 mm and erythrocyte sedimentation rate as 56.5 ± 18.8 (22- 89) mm/hour. Radiological findings were found as follows: paranchymal infiltration at the chest graphy were in 25 patients, hilar stuffiness in 22 patients, hilar lymphadenopathy in four patients , and cavitary lesion in one . Conclusion: Tuberculosis seen in children is one of the most common health problems in developing countries such as our country. The lack of the highly sensitive and specific diagnostic methods had been caused the delay of diagnosis. Today for diagnosis the contact history, positive tuberculin test, and meaningful clinical findings had been continued to be gold standart. ©2006, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi |
